Custom Dashboard Control
Independent Design Project
My model of boat was designed so the music could be controlled from in the glove box next to the passenger seat. This made it impossible to control the volume of the music from the driver seat. It was unsafe because I could not turn the volume down and give instructions to passengers.
I decided to remove the dashboard piece where the ignition was and fabricate a new one to accommodate both the ignition and an audio control. I started by removing the dashboard piece. I then 3D scanned the panel and imported the file into a program called Meshmixer. I eliminated imperfections in the scan and added a new extrude for the volume control. I 3D printed the new dash part.
I also laser cut and rastered a black piece of acrylic so the driver would know what position the key was in. I fastened the ignition and volume control to my dash piece and then mounted the new dash piece on the dash board. Lastly I wired in the ignition.
